2026.04.3012:00:00UTC+00Mexico’s Economy Contracts in Early 2026 as GDP Falls 0.8% QoQ

Mexico’s gross domestic product slipped into negative territory in the first quarter of 2026, contracting by 0.8% quarter-over-quarter, according to data updated on 30 April 2026. The decline marks a clear reversal from the 0.9% quarter-on-quarter expansion recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025.

On a quarter-over-quarter basis, the latest figure shows that momentum has weakened notably at the start of 2026. While the previous reading reflected growth compared with the third quarter of 2025, the current data point indicates that overall economic activity has fallen compared with the final quarter of last year. This shift from modest growth to contraction underscores rising headwinds for Mexico’s economy as the year begins.

The comparison framework highlights how sharply conditions have changed: the “Actual” measure captures the move from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026, while the “Previous” measure tracked the improvement from Q3 to Q4 2025. With the growth rate turning negative, investors and policymakers will be watching upcoming quarters closely for signs of whether this downturn is temporary or the start of a more prolonged slowdown.
